I have seen date codes stamped into the frames on the rear cross member (in front of gas tank), but not the VIN. That would be on the top of the wiper motor plate and on the tag just under the steering staft on the firewall.

There is normally a plate or sticker in one of three locations (that I have seen). A sticker on the driver's side of the dash, a sticker on the inside of the rocker panel on the driver's side near the floor, and a plate on the driver's side of the firewall near the top. Most likely, if the Jeep has undergone any major body repairs, the VIN is gone. In my case, the letters have faded or worn off, and I can't read them anymore, but that's ok...I'm replacing the frame and tub anyway.

Hey,

Frame, passenger side, rear wheel "hump", on top. 81 CJ7 I took down to the frame had it there, I didn't see it until I had ground off the whole frame.

Later

Your '83 did not have one on the dash. That was prior to '81 IIRC. You should be able to find it in three locations on your '83. There should be a plate on the firewall below the wiring harness connection. There should be another plate riveted to the windshield frame with the wiper motor. The VIN tag/strip will be riveted on the top of this plate. If you have a dash pad, there is a "notch" in the pad for it to be seen from the outside. The VIN should be "stamped" on the passenger's side frame as described above.
