VIDEO: Knocking sound, need help. CJ5

Video of my CJ5 first run... Listen to the knocking sound. It goes away when I press the clutch in completely. And comes back when releasing the clutch. Anyone gimme some ideas to what may be causing this.

Did you just do some work to it? While I was doing a T18 swap, the flywheel bolts were just a little bit longer and they hit the inspection cover. It sounded just like yours.

At first I thought throwout bearing... but sounds too loud and consistent when moving in gear. More to follow...

nice tummy...lol

No, I don't think the the throw out bearing ether. Have you looked underneath to make sure the exhaust isn't shaking against anything? it sounds like when you take a poker card and get it too near a fan that's spinning

just my 2 cents

KnOCK

I would say flex plate bolts hitting cover. When there is torque ,between the motor and trans . Could be wrong plate or the starter took a shot and bent the plate in to hit the bolts,or a bolt just worked loose.imo. I had a car with same problem ,my problem was wrong plate.

Since you still have the noise in neutral, it would have to be caused by something on the input shaft or the counter shaft in the transmission. Those are the only parts that are still moving in neutral. Either you have a really bad bearing or a broken tooth on one of the gears. The fact that the noise stops when you press the clutch isolates your problem to the transmission.

I had a similar problem a few years ago when I was swapping a muncie into a toyota. IIRC the clutch fork was in backwards and was hitting the fingers on the clutch. Once the pedal was pushed in, it allowed for clearance.

I’ll take a stab at it.

I have 75’ CJ5 and I had a similar nock with similar reactions when engaged and disengaged. During my rebuild I did not realize that there is a pilot bushing in the flywheel that should have been replaced while I had it torn apart. It looks like a little brass ring that is press fit in there. Was a pain in the arse to get out, but when I did there was hardly anything left to it when compared to the new one I put back in. My problem was solved.

Good luck
