Valve cover leak fixin

Ok, I'm going to tackle this this weekend. I have two fel pro cork gaskets (one for spare) and RTV. Going to clean real good per Mike Romain's advice, let the RTV cure for 24 hours, etc.

I have a question. What is the recommended torque value on the cover bolts? I don't want to gorilla these things and mess it up.

Of course oil change along with this. I'm going with 10w 30 Rotella. What's the best filter to use? Delco, Fram, ?

Appreciate it!

The latest generation of Fram filters are a failure, they let the engine empty out of oil overnight causing 'bad' start up noises with a dry start (0 on the mechanical oil pressure gauge).

My plastic cover only has the two rocker bridge nuts holding it on and I believe they were 9 inch pounds or something like that. I basically use a 1/4" drive socket wrench held with my thumb and first finger with my baby finger only doing the turning.

It is really important to do them in the pattern called for, just like head bolts for pattern if you have rim bolts and 'really' gently alternating on the two top ones if you have those. I do them more than one time around, all with wet RTV as per the RTV directions on the package.

If you have an O2 sensor, make sure you get 'sensor safe' RTV. The regular stuff will kill the O2 faster than 'you' can smell it coming almost. Permatex calls this the 'Ultra' line I think..

a year ago i tried everything to get mine to quit leaking till finally i broke down and bought a rubber gasket and it solved all my problems. mine cost around $30 but no rtv, and they're re-usable. I'm currently rebuilding my engine and i just put the valve cover back on same rubber gasket and the manuel said around 15 in-lbs

for my 304 I got the rubber gasket, RTV's it to the valve cover, the outer edge and then wiped a little oil all around the edge, like you do for an oil filter and then tightend the valve cover down. Made sure i had fixed the valve cover as the PO had tightend it down and bent the cover. I didn't measure the torque just went tight w/l defoming the cover, no leaks as of yet
