I have a few questions if you guys can help.I have two jeeps a 77 cj-5& a 84 cj7 the 5 has a 304 with a 3 speed the 7 has a 258 with a 4 speed.1st.I'll be mostly on the street but I also plan to do moderate trail ridding in the future,I have a chance to get an 258 bored .060 with a 5 speed.Would that be a good set up with a intake, carb, and headers?also I would like to do the HEI swap or other high ignition change can someone help with the parts I need to get and what I have to do to get it done,do I get rid of the present eletronic stuff?also I,m pretty sure I'm going to keep the 7 so is there anything I should swap from the 5 before I sell it?and 1 last thing,is there somewhere I can go to get all the ad ons, swaps,up grades, etc from other vechecles?how aboat power brakes, rear disc's,stuff like that.thanks in advance from tx.

I just installed a H.E.I distributer in my 304 from D.U.I ( davis unified electronics)
very easy to install. it only takes one 12 volt wire and it works great. kinda expensive though.

The aftermarket stuff might be offered in 4Wheel Drive Hardware. www.4wd.com
Get the catalog it's much easier to find what you are looking for.
You dont want to swing the V8 into the CJ7?

I have thought about swapping motors but I've read that it is so expensive to build up 304 that I'm shying away from it.If I did the swap would the 4 speed bolt up to to the 304 without a adapter?

I have a 304 in my cj7. I really don't like it. The power output isn't very good. The 3 speed tranny doesn't help. If i were you I would go with the beefed up 258.

I have a 304 V-8 that has been professionally rebuilt. It has 9 1/2 to 1 compression, bored .30 over, a mild cam, stock: carb, intake and exhaust manifolds. The Jeep has a low restriction dual exhaust (she is loud!!)

This engine has plenty of power. I am running 33in Super Swampers with 3.73 gears and my CJ5 is very quick and powerful.

The rebuild including parts cost $2,4oo. I could only imagine how it would be with headers, an intake manifold and a 4 bbl carb.

I am a sucker for cubic inches. I always liked my Jeeps with V-8's better than the 6's.

But I would not use the three speed. The gears are just to wide. Is it the t-18 that has the ultra low first gear? Someone help me out here. (too lazy to go check in my Jeep books)

Good luck!
