U-Joint bolt size

I am going to purchase a 79 CJ-7 and flat tow it home ~300 miles. I understand I need to unlock the front hubs, place both the xfer case and transmission in neutral with the steering unlocked and disconnect the rear drive shaft. To do so I believe I remove the nuts from the u-joint... I was wondering if anyone here knows what size these nuts will be? I just want to make sure I have the correct tools with me.

Regards,

Troy

The actual bolt size is 1/4". In most cases it takes a 5/16" box end wrench to remove the nuts if ubolt type yokes and the same for the bolt if you have the strap type yokes. Some of the bolts on the strap type have 12-point heads.

Have a set of SAE combination wrenches on hand and you'll have the needed tools to remove driveshafts.

Since you are asking for nuts I assume you have U bolt yokes. The nuts are 5/16 x 24. You should get grade 8 quality nuts and good quality split lock washers.

Jeep is purchased, tow bar shackles mounted on the front frame member, rear drive shaft with 1/2" nuts was disconnected and safely towed 350 miles home.
