Turn the key, won't turn over?

Where to begin.

1980 CJ 7 4.2, 258 I6

New starter, good battery, won't turn over?

New plugs & distributor cap. Oil change.

!!!(Before the cap & plugs and wires she ran ok, just wouldn't start? We didn't change anything, and now it back fires, the problem has to be with that arear I suspect?)!!!

Turn the key and all you get is backfire from the carb? We have the firing order right. All I can think is that the cap is the wrong cap since the placement of the screws is different on the diagram I have than from our cap we bought from autozone? Could that cause backfire maybe?

Where to start to get her running from the pros... We're at the crossroads...

Basically what would be your next step, if she was yours. I'm folling the firing order and the diagrams perfectly.

I am going to say your timing is off as well. I would double check the cap to make sure it is on correctly. You didn't move the distributor at all did you? Also check you wires, could be some corrosion in them.

new wires...I think someone over the years has messed with the distributor honestly, cause we are dead on...Thanks Bard, I know, this is frustrating.

Backfire or upfire (I just saw your other thread through the carb) as your cranking either means you put the dist on 180 out, or you've got the wires out of order; you're ignition is trying to fire a cylinder on the exhaust or intake stroke.

from other thread, I am good to go, I was 180 out! Turned the distributor around, worked perfect.
