How about the Wheelhouse modification on top where the roll bar mounts? Still using the Wheelhouse from 1976-79 tubs with the bead ridges full length or 1980-86 Wheel house with the correct bead ridge that has an interruption for mounting the later factory roll bar on top of the Wheelhouse as pictured below?

How about the hole for the electrical wiring harness on the drivers side back corner?

Hey Keith,

Can we use the YJ Wheelhouse as reference? This is the sample that we have. If this is correct we will revise our dies to adapt to this change.

Hi Rommel,

The YJ wheelhouse is the same as the CJ7 wheelhouse for Mid-1979-1986. The fold and tumble seat hold down bracket holes are the same also. The only difference would be the spare tire reinforcement bracket holes that are located on the passenger side wheelhouse on the bottom near the tailgate opening.

Yes Rommel, as BlkCJ7Laredo has pointed out, the wheelhouse for the YJ is the same as the later 1980-86 CJ's.

I wouldn't add the fold & tumble seat mounting bracket as many Jeep CJ's did not have them until the 1985 model year. That can be added by the owner if they wish. And besides, aftermarket rear seats do not attach to the wheelhouse anchoring point unless you have an older Bestop brand rear seat.

The only items I would add are the wire loom hole on the drivers side and tailgate cable brackets for both sides.

I'm out on a limb for the condensation drain hole on each wheelhouse for the roll bar seep hole when mounted. That is where rust usually starts but if one were to paint the tub and roll bar separately, should be OK.

Hey Keith,

My first CJ was a 1979 and it had the newer style roll bar like our '84 and '85's have but no shoulder seat belts. From what I found it was a running change sometime during the '79 model year.

Good point on the mounting holes. Perhaps on some of these items that were on some years but not on others or were optional it might be a good idea to stamp a slight depression in the panels where the holes are supposed to be so then all the installer needs to do is drill where the tub is already marked.

I made some year roll bar mounting corrections on the above posts after pulling out some history books and literature. The transition was late in 1979 when AMC started making and tooling up for the changes for the 1980 models and had those pieces already being made to use on the still existing 1979 models. Other car manufactures would have never done such a thing but we all know how cheap AMC was, they wasted nothing.

Just like the Jeep and Joop scripting on the body side panels that started in mid 1984. Some CJ's even left the factory with ones side panel as Jeep and the other as a Joop.

Our minds think the same! Just a small pin punch dimple for locating the holes to be drilled if desired, is the Holy Grail.

Yes they do. It must be a Jeep thing. Another place that these dimples could be placed are for the 16 floor drain holes. Then those who want them can put them there with a 1" hole saw and the rest of those who don't want them can leave them undrilled.

We have two 79 cj5's. One early and one late.

The changes are exactly as described.

Actually I stand corrected Keith. There are 17 by looking at pictures of that 6,000 mile CJ that a forum member here sold to Collins Bros. It may vary by year. My '89 YJ tub only has 13 drain holes.

Sure thing Rommel, There's definitely 17 on the later CJ tubs. The pictures of the stripped out blue CJ below are a 1982 model.
