JagerLager, First of all not to trying to Hi-jack! Ok I have 18 Ga steel I'm trying to practice weld, I have one practice piece that isn't going to well , Question, What size and kind of Rod are you using and at what amps.
For you welders, where can you pick up some steel to practice on?
Thanks. Rick

Jager, nice job. You're hired.
Glad to see you reviving the old tub!
Slik, looks like he's using a mig.

Thanks guys!
Fatman- I continue to learn a great deal from your threads!!!! thank you!!
Slik-
I am using a gasless wire feed set to the lowest heat and very low wire speed for the sheet metal ( 16 ga.)... Thanks to good advice from the folks on this forum!
I have learned to start from the "good" thicker newer metal and work the puddle (*now that I can see it) into the old in a weave. Penetration is the key... again thanks to the guys on this forum I can almost weld. It helped me to get a #9 shade as opposed to a # 10 for the sheet metal. My biggest challenge so far is working the heat to not cup/warp the sheet so much.
The settings on the welder in this picture are not what I use for sheet metal.

Floor panel, body mounts and strengthening some mounting points with washer. Its getting a little easier. but by no means easy. Fun Fun Fun.
I'm off to have a few and listen to some live rock and roll. Have a good weekend!

Great job so far. By that pic of the welder, it looks like it is set to the highest heat.

that's an older photo... I have it set at Lowest heat and wire speed of about 1.5 for most of the sheet. Its working well for the most part. If I'm dealing with 2 sheets of new 16 ga. I bump the heat up a notch and wire speed of 2.
I know just about 00000000000000 about welding , But Im learning.

Real nice job. This is a great project for you to work on. Once you are done, you will definitely be a welding expert!

This is most definitely a great project for me.
70% of the reason I am doing this is to learn. 20% because I love jeeps, and 10% because I am stubborn, this is a pain in the a** and I need to win this battle. Its pretty fun too.
A few pictures of the latest progress.

I hope this thread isnt annoying (because I post in my own thread so much!)
It's just fun for me to document and share the progress.
I wish my crappy camera could do a better job of this. in the pictures all my welds look crappy, and it looks like theres more surface rust than there actually is.
My welds arent nice and pretty, but I am really starting to understand the process, and they are much more structural and clean than when I started.
This side is a breeze compared to the other...and I went back and cleaned up some of the areas wher it looked like I was having a stroke at the time. my handicap is getting smaller.
Just a few more things on the rear panels and the majority is done. I'll need to consider some more cut out and replacement of a few key areas after the fact. (seatbelt locations and roll bar area and stuff) then its cleaning welds up, grinding, a light sand blasting and paint. I can't wait for paint. I want to assemble this thing!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been forgetting to mention that critique is good in my view, so anything you could point out or suggest in general... let her fly.
Thanks!

Jager,
tub is look'n great.
I've been watching this since you started and am glad I've got this chapter behind me.
How long before you start with the filler and what are you going to use.
When you get to the point of running seam sealer, don't use the brushable, that was a mistake on my part, tube or caulk gun type and wipe with a finger.
Keep it coming.
