trying to figure out jeep year

A freind of mine is looking at a what i belevie is a CJ-7. He said the owner claims it to be late 80's but my freind said it has round headlights and a metal dash so that would lead me to think it is a CJ. I am going to look at it with him today and give it a check over. I was looking up info and he told me it has a 4 cylnder. I never knew they came with a 4 banger. I did some reserch on jeepipeadia and found out it was a gm built engine starting in 1980? Any more information about this motor? jeep is a bit of a project as it is currently a DW plow. My freind also said it has 3 sticks. this is what got m thinking it is older. And the third stick is part of the transfercase not the plow. IT is a cheap old project that needs alot of wrok but if the frame is good and the tub is okay i think it would be worth doing

probably a 84-86 CJ7. The third stick is a twin sticked transfer case, not unheard of.

look on the firewall in the engine compartment. there is a stamped metal plate rivoted on there that lists the yr, model, and original equipment. You can decode it with the table on this site

You sure it's not an Early CJ-5? It seems far more likely to me that it would be an F-head Jeep with a Dana 18 and twin sticks than a Dana 300 that's been converted.

It is difficult to mistake a 5 for a 7, but you're listing off things that are very common to the '55-'6? CJ5. That would be a 134 cid 4 cyl, twin stick D18 t-case, T-90 3 spd trans, metal dash, and plows were very common implements.
