Transmission noise.

Why does the t176 have a grinding sound in 1,2,3rd gears but not 4th? I recently changed the fluid and it helped out a great deal but I still get the same noise just not as loud.

Perhaps the reason is it's 30 years old and flat worn out. Here's a link to a quality rebuild kit.

sounds like something wrong with the countershaft as it's part of the driven gear set only in 1st thru 3rd. Could be a thrust washer problem or the needle bearings. Just have to take it apart to see what things look like.

Like everyone else said you probably have to pull it out and apart. In 4th gear the input shaft and the output shaft are locked together to give you the 1 to 1 ratio. If you have noise in all gears but 4th gear the pocket bearing in the back of the input shaft is probably worn, they are usually needle bearings. The counter shaft is driven by the input shaft all the time so those bearings will make noise all the time if one is bad.

You may also check to insure the nut on the bull gear is tight. A loose nut can allow the mainshaft to move.
