I had the same problem with my 1981 w/ SR4. For me, I did not realize what was causing it until I managed to actually BREAK the shifter.

When I removed the old shifter, I looked into the shifting area, and it had about 1" of water! When cold, it would freeze the shifting components into a block of ice.

Could be other things, but at least an easy thing to fix if this is the case.

does it only happen when it gets cold? does it get any better once you warm the jeep up?

I had troubles shifting my T5. I know it's completely different, but I replaced the gear oil with the recommended Transmission fluid and the problems cleared up.

Yes it only happens when it gets cold. It's fine after it's warmed up.

sounds like the combination of the thick gear oil and the cold weather. my t5 is a little "stiff" before it warms up as well in the cold weather. i wouldnt be concerned as long as thats the only thing that seems off. let it warm up before you take it out.
