transfer case the same for automatic and manual transmissions?

Hi all,

Just starting conversion project for 1998 Wrangler TJ from standard transmission to automatic transmission. Is transfer case the same for standard as for automatic?

Also, we are looking for a good, used automatic transmission (rebuildable unit) with shifter and so forth. And, once the conversion is completed, husband will rebuild the manual transmission and it will be for sale. Anybody want to trade an automatic for a standard trans?! (He rebuilt transmissions professionally for 20 years.)

Thanks!
Weeza Anna

Wrong section, you'll need to move your post to the TJ forum, this is the CJ one, but yes the 231 in TJs(also XJ and LJs) were same whether behind an Auto or manual IIRC from 1996 to 2006, unless it was a rubicon and then it is a 241OR with different gearing.

Not quite, the ones behind the AX-5 were 21 spline and the some had longer input shafts than others with the 23 spline input.

The 4 bangers did.

Interesting. I thought the AX5 was only used on 4cyl YJs.

Shows how much attention I pay to later models.
