transfer case rattle I think ????

When driving in 2wd and the drive shafts are not under load I have a very significant rattle (metal on metal) it sounds like coming from the transfer case. When I drive in 4wd Low or 4wd High there is no rattle.
I have checked the u-joints and feel good that they are all in good shape.
The transmission shifts fine and seems to not have any indication that it is a problem.

I am thinking that I need to pull the transfer case and rebuild it as a starting point. It is a 1973 jeep cj5 with untold miles. The engine has been replaced but I believe the transmission and transfer case to be original.

Any suggestions?

new information. After several test drives, It only occurs in third gear when there is no load on the drive. I guess I am going to drop to transmission and transfer case and start going through them.
