Trans ??'s

I have a CJ7 with a bad T-176 w/Dana 300 trans and looking to replace it. I found a T150 w/Dana 20. I need to know a few things. Will this be a simple exchange or will I need new driveshafts and clutch and pressure plate? Or can the trans cases be exchanged from the 176 to 150??

I think you'd be kicking yourself if you make that swap. The T176/D300 is alot better than the T150/D20.... sell off the T150/D20 and use the money toward a rebuild of the T176....

Ditto...The Dana 300 is the gem of stock t'cases (not that the Dana 20 is bad, I have one), The T176 gives you a nice lower first gear than the T150. The T150 might be a touch stronger. Rebuild the T176. It's not hard. If you can swap transmissions you can rebuild a T176. You'll only need to buy or borrow a couple non-typical tools (bearing separter, two jaw puller & retaining ring pliers-for rings with no holes). I have some manual pages I'll send you if you decide to do it.

Can you send me the manual. I might just rebuild the 176.

You can't do anything without a quality retaining ring pliers.

The puller set is exellent if you could find one. (Buy? Cost more than I paid for the tranny.) I couldn't so I used plan "B" but that destroys the input bearing. (I had to replace mine anyway so it didn't matter.)

I used a piece of 1/2" PVC pipe and a piece of 1/2" metal thinwall conduit as an arbor shaft.

Good looking out on with that link. That looks like a good Summer project for the wifey's CJ5... It clashes a little going into second gear.. the fact that I speed shift it probably doesn't help

Fancy bearing pullers arn't nessery. A cheap bearing splitter will usually do the trick. Another trick is to use a blunt chisel bit in an air hammer. Remove the inner snap ring. Plack the bit behind the outer ring, prying against the casing. Softly "rattle"on the bearing snap ring(be sure to use eye protection). 99% of the time this will walk the bearing off the shaft.
