Need some help. I have a 86 CJ7 with 304 and 4 speed trans. When I let the clutch out at an idle it sounds like a friction rub. When I push the clutch in it quits. While driving it give me the same sound in 1st, 2nd, 3rd but goes away in 4th. I was told it was the bearings in the trans but need some advise. Thanks
What 4 speed? a V8 wasn't available in 86 so if everything wasn't swapped you could have a T-4 or (gasp) a SR-4 behind that V8. Better hope it's a T-18 or a T-176 otherwise it's not worth rebuilding that tranny if it's behind a V8.
The Jeep came with a 258 and the driveline was kept original (3rd owner). I plan on pulling it out this weekend to see what it is. Also there is fluid that is coming out of the front of the trans. not sure why. thought it was a rear main and turned out it wasn't.
I thought so at first but he has it in every gear except 4th. It could also be thos little needle bearing beteween the gear cluster and the clutch shaft. when in 4th those bearings are not turning but are in every other gear.
I have never rebuilt a transmission. Would it be cheaper to replace the trans or have it rebuilt? If replacement is need what should I look for? (SR4 or T4). The Jeep is going to be used for plowing snow and to have fun with. Thanks for the input.
Ok just got the trans and transfer case out.. The clutch disc was shot along with the through out bearing. Everything looks good inside but the front input shaft wiggles alitte bit. Could this be a bad bearing or are they suppose to move. The numbers on the trans that I could find are as follows 35 9383 RGFF15 0611 this is on the plate but on the front shifter cover it has C2604208. Not sure if this is a T4 or SR4? Thanks for your help.
Do not waste time or money putting an SR-4 in your Jeep, even a T-4 will be very maginal for plowing snow. You really need to switch to at least a T-176. If it's the original 4 speed to the Jeep from '86, it won't be an SR-4
Check out http://www.jeeptech.com/trans/t4.html It's a better tranny ID site, and the T-4 and T-5 look a lot like the T-176. If you want I can check your parts #s against my 1985 parts list. If it's a T-4, the numbers should be the same as with mine. Let me know.
I have an 84 CJ7 with a four speed. The tranny is a T177 b/c I got the TALL 2.73 rear end but I will change that sometime down the road. My tranny drives and shifts great but I have the same loud whir in 1st - 3rd. Throw it in 4th and it doesn't make a sound. I am hoping that it is just the input bearing. I am going to have someone look at it in the next few weeks to see what they say.
I am going to have them drive it first and depending on what they say remove it myself and bring it to them.
If anyone has had the input bearing replaced or even a full rebuild on a T176/T177 (gasp... I hope not) I would be interested to hear about what was done and an approx cost.
The casting numbers on the T-176 are 2604203 according to Jeeptech.com. Mine might be 2604203 instead of 2604208. Hard to see with all the dirt. Thanks for the web pages
I found a T18 trans local in the area for $400. What our your opions on it. Also will this fit a Dana300 T/case. If so will I need different driveshafts for front and rear. Thanks
