Tranny question on 1964 CJ5

I am a new jeep owner. Bought this CJ5 a few months ago.

Everything is pretty much all stock, original.
Original F134 engine, original 3 speed transmission.

My question is:

When I am down shifting to 1st gear, I have to come to a complete stop in order to do that, other wise it will be grinding.

I can down shift to 2nd gear fine.

Is this normal? or does it mean some part needs to be fixed?

Please help.

Thanks

Yes this is normal. 1st gear is not synchronized on the majority of the early transmissions.

Start practicing "double clutching". As you go from 2nd to first, let the clutch out in neutral while revving the engine a little. This will get the gears spinning in the transmission. Then dis-engage the clutch and try to get the trans into 1st. Start practicing this while moving slowly. Once you get the feel for the engine RPM's matching the trans RPM's, you will be able to get into first with little or no grinding while on the move.
