Do you happen to have a body lift or a dropped tranny or anything that might mess with the shifter itself. Sometimes with a body lift, the shifter hits the edge of the cut out sooner and thus, won't let you go all the way into gear.

You could also have the SR-4 Junk tranny 4-speed. It was used behind some 258s that year, unfortunately.

The SR-4 is a very light-duty tranny made by Ford that Jeep used for a few years in the early 80s, unfortunately. It was used mostly behind the GM 151 4-banger, but was also put behind some 258s for some reason. It was OK behind the 4-banger as long as it wasn't beat-on, but usually wore out quickly behind the torquey 258.

IF YOU DO have it (you still could have the T-176, which is a good tranny, but you'll have to check to be sure which it is) it is not simply swapped, you'd have to change the bellhousing and possibly have the driveshafts "adjusted" if the tranny length is different. You could swap just about any post-80 tranny in, if you were to go that route, since you would have to change the bellhousing anyway. You have a Dana 300 TC, that's why I say any post-80 tranny, because that will minimize any further changes you'd have to make in a swap.

But, before you swap anything or even think about it, check for sure which tranny it is. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

i had the same problem with my jeep. i have the sr-4 and 258. it was $415 of my parents money to fix. the reverse sliding gear and the reverse idler gear were chipped up. the mechanic said that he paid $130 for one gear and $150 for the other. i wouldnt have paid that much to fix it (expecially since 4wd hardware only charges about $55 and $63 for the same gears) except my mom answered the phone and told them to go ahead and fix it. i saved some money by removing the tranny myself, which took about 2 hours. again, i am talking about my sr-4. i dont know about any othere trannys. you can tell which one you have by several ways. the t-176(as far as i know) has a straight shifter stick, while the sr-4 has several curves. the top cover of the sr-4 has "13-32" cast into it, and possibly has the ford oval as wwell. the sr-4 has a cast ally case, while the t-176 is cast iron or steel?? as far as tranny swaps go, i read in 4wd hard. that a t-4 or t-5 will interchange with the sr-4. htey make a "world class" t-5 which i heard is good, but it costs like 1600 bucks. i hope that i have been of help to you, and good luck!! jairus

If you have the body off your CJ now is a great time to put in any tranny. If you are serious enough about your jeep to do a tub you should upgrade tranny too
