I don't think I would tow much more than the weight equal to a couple of jet skis plus gear or a med size pop up camper and gear. Even at that I would not do it for any long distance. I towed a 14 foot double axle cargo trailer ( filled with couches, bed, and other house hold stuff )from College Station Texas to Richmond Va. It got squirly several times. All the tires were checked and fine, bearings lubed, the hitch was solid, and the load was ballenced. Lets just put it this way, when I look at any CJ, YJ, or TJ now, I do not see a tow vehicle. They are not built for it if you ask me.

The guy who owned my CJ before me towed an 18' double axle boat with it. The was the reason he said he bought the 304 instead of the 6 cyl. I use mine to move my 24' cabin cruiser around in and out of my driveway(shorter vehicle than my truck makes it easier to maneuver the boat in tight spots). Powerwise no problem. Personally, I would be scared to tow even the 18' boat he used to tow becuase the braking system on mine(even though all new brake parts) has a hard enough time with the CJ alone.

I posted in the other post you did, but I used to tow a 21' Wellcraft Fishing Boat all the time on and off highway, etc., no problem.
My vehicle was a '77 CJ-7 with stock 11" Drum Manual Brakes all around, a Clifford Performance-Modified 258, a T-18A tranny, and 3.54 gears with 31x12.50R15 (325/60) BFG ATs. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> |
