I have a 76 CJ5 that I flat tow every weekend. I have a T-150 tranny with a Dana 20 T-case, I put both in neutral, steering column unlocked and take off, no problems. I also have Warn hubs that I ensure are in the free position. I would recommend towing your vehicle a little bit to see how it is going to react prior to the long haul.
Good Luck!!
