Got mine running right before dark today!I struggled for about a hour and a half checking connections. It turned out my brand new fuel pump made the noise of working, but it was not pumping any fuel.Changed it out with another one and it fired right up.
I just need better linkage and an air filter/housing.
I have a 1971 Chevy 350 V8 from an El Camino Custom in my 1986 CJ7 and would like to put a FI system on it instead of the Rochester carb thats on there... What vehicle should I be looking at as a donor? CK1500?
Matt you need to come over next time I do a TBI conversion (mine are much tidier BTW). I can guarantee that you've spent more time researching your timing advance and carb jetting than you would on EFI.
Personally from what i 've seen the ones doing the 4.0 MPI just transplant the 4.0 motor or use their crank and rods to stroke the 4.0.
Retro fitting the 4.0 MPI has a couple of high dollar parts/mods that make the TBI conversion look great. It requires a crank position sensor that requires a new harmonic balancer or a 4.0 fly wheel and a mod to the bell housing for the sensor.
There were a couple I think John Strenk being one i believe was throwing around the idea of the MPI with a mega squirt controller and having it fire in batch mode.
I'm running a mpfi on my 79 cj. Top half of a '93 4.0. The harmonic balancer/CPS isn't completely necessary. I followed a plan posted by marty86cj where he cut a hole in the bell housing and mounted in the stock CPS in the standard position. Cevans in the yj forum has the definitive write up on this swap.
Did the swap for under $400. Best mod I've ever done!
I dunno, a quirky old carburetor just seems to fit on an old CJ, IMO. Let's face it, these things are the automotive equivalent of a T-rex. If I want to sleuth thru electrical/computer issues, I'll hold onto my Tundra for 30 years, then experience the joys of working on that stuff...
