Tire Carrier Latch

I am looking to start building my tire carrier for my Jeep and got a hold of a couple of De Sta Co latches on the cheap, they are 324-ss models.

At first I was thinking that the 500 lb rating was plenty sufficient for a tire carrier, but not that I have them in my hands, they seem a little small to be up to the job.

Has anyone used the 500lb rated latches on their tire carriers, do you regret it and wish you went with the 1000 or 2000 lb rated latches?
