Timing question & adjusting carb question.
OK. I have a DUI HEI module and a Weber 32/36 DGEV. I have my timing set really close to 8 degrees. Jeep accelerates well, but I think I may hear a little pinging. I tried advancing/retarding a little, but still I hear pinging. What are you guys setting timing at with this setup?
Second question. I followed this article and I cannot get my setup to idle at 1000 RPM like it suggests, atleast with the idle set screw only turned in 1/2 turn after I got it resting on the throttle with zero pressure. I have the fuel mixture screw set at 1 1/2 turns from closed like the link suggested, and I still cannot get this faster idle unless I crank in the idle set screw. Again, timing is set very close to 8 degrees.
Suggestion?

I had mine set around 10 deg. BTDC with weber and HEI. Had no problems with idle. I'm not understanding what your problem is (besides pinging). Is it idling too high? Also, do not bottom out the mixture screws. It damages the needle/seat if you crank on them. Just barely!
What altitude are you at? Also, what fuel pressure are you running on the carb. I remember you have the regulator. Also, if you still have the third outlet on the fuel fitler going to the tank, you will lose pressure. I had to plug mine to be able to run right.

Bio to the rescue once again!!! haha
Yes, I barely bottomed out the mixtue screw with minimal tightening and then backed it out 1.5 turns like step 1 says to in the directions linked in my first post of this thread.
Step 2 says to "Turn idle speed adjusting screw so that it just hits the throttle bellcrank. Now turn another .5 turn". In this setting, I cannot get the jeep to idle. The idle speed screw needs to be turned about 3 or 4 turns to get it to idle, but according to the link, it should not.
Step 4 says "Nurse the car with the throttle/choke/whatever until it warms up and you can completely open the choke. Note, you may need to bump the idle up to get it to idle without any throttle. Ok, now it's idling on its own without the throttle". Again, I cannot get an idle unless my idle screw is turned in 3 or 4 turns. Just trying to do what the directions say to do. Why am I not getting an idle here???
Step 6 says "Now that you have the fastest idle speed attainable, back the idle speed adjustor down until you get the idle to 1000 rpm or less. If you can't do that, then you might want to make sure you don't have too much ignition advance. You basically want to get the idle to spec AND have the throttle as closed as possible. (The reason for this is if you have to have the throttle open any, you begin to bring the progression ports into play which suggests that you don't have the correct jetting for you application. In this case, your idle jet would be too lean and you'd need to go to a richer idle jet)". After playing with the mixture screw and screwing in the idles screw 3 or 4 turns, the Jeep is only idleing max at about 700 rpm (according to my factory tach). I cannot get me idle to go this high unless I really crank the idle set screw, which I do not really want to do because it should be working with even screwing it the 3/4 turns I already have.
My timing is set very close to 8 degrees, but will go to 10 degrees tomorrow. However, why am I not getting this idle RPM with the initial adjustments the link said I should be using?

I believe you have the linkage adjusted wrong. There is a turnbuckle that will lengthen/ shorten the accelerator linkage to get it in the ballpark, then you can use the idle srew for fine adjust. Get it? I can take a picture of mine if you need.

Roger that. I get it. Will make adjustments tomorrow and let you know what happens.
Thanks again.

Take a look at some of the other Tune Documents in the link I showed you they differ some.
When you need to screw the Idle Screw in too many turns, it is a sign your idle jets are too big.

Here is what I'm talking about. Where the adjusting rod connects on the right, there are a couple of holes to chose from, and you can adjust the length. I believe this is the problem you have.

Another quick question since we are on the topic of fuel... When I shot off the engine, I noticed the charcoal canister was making some sort of noise. Is this normal?
The reason I noticed is because I smelled some funny burning smell coming from the engine, opened the engine, and noticed this smell. I think I am getting this mild burning smell from all the work and stuff I did in the engine compartment. Hopefully it is just dirt and oil and other stuff burning off the engine.
EDIT: Bio, your pic did not upload. However, I know what your talking about. Thanks.
