Timing cover ?'s
1} I pulled off my timing cover today on my 304 looked like the distributor gear on the end of the cam had some wear in it. Anyone had any problems like this? I'm running a MSD distributor with a stock gear on the cam.
2} What is the best water pump and radiator to purchase? I'm not rock crawling or anything like that. So I really don't need the most expensive stuff. I just want something dependable. Any Help is appreciated. Thanks, Dave

I just did this before Christmas. The gear on my distributor was worn badly on one side of the gear causing it to lose contact with the cam gear and with out a spinning dizzy you're not gonna get any spark.
I tore into it and replaced the entire timing set while I was in there. My water pump was fine so I left well enough alone. I spent just under $100 including the RTV to put a new cam timing gear, timing chain, and dizzy gear into my CJ 7. Replace it all, its a PITA to do so do NOT button this up without putting a new timing set in there. For normal street use just by a replacement radiator at your favorite parts store. By the way, what caused you to pull your timing cover. This isn't a chore somebody does because they were bored!

I was fortunate enough to have the dizzy gear problem also. I agree with the above. I replaced everything while I was in there. I figured no more than it cost, it would be well worth not having to tear all that down again. It is a pretty big job.

Nozzleram,
I had to replace the timing cover gasket. As soon as I cranked up the jeep it started dripping oil. A buddy of mine had the same problem with his dist. gear. He replaced the gear and within a 100 miles it wore the teeth off of his new gear. I was wondering what would cause this to happen? |

Your buddy treated a symptom and neglected to cure the problem. The dizzy gear is being eaten by the gear on the camshaft. The camshaft timing gear is worn and needs to be replaced. The dizzy gear will only last a short while trying to mate up with a timing gear that is seriously worn.
I did the same thing in hopes of getting a few weeks of use out of my Jeep but I was only able to use it for one afternoon before it died again. Tell your buddy to bite the bullet and make the repair. Its not expensive but it is a big PITA. He may want to do an oil change because all the material you see missing on the dizzy gear went into the oil pan.
