timing chain

alright lately i have read alot of 258's having problems with the timing chain and damage being caused to the engine. is there anything tells if its gunna happen to me, also is there anything to do to prevent it. i have an 89 with 95k and i would hate for it to blow on me(i am 17 and broke), i have done all the maintaince but i have no clue what the PO's have done to it. the lady i bought it from was really butch so hopefully she maintained it.

Since I had the oil pan off of mine replacing the piston I did have slop in the timing chain. I picked a new timing chain and gasket set since the harmonic ballancer seal was leaking.I also got the intake & exhaust manifold gaskets for under 100 bucks.

You can check the timing chain by:
Remove the fuel pump (easy)
Rotate the engine so the timing mark is at 0.
Use a flashlight to look through the fuel pump opening
have a buddy rotate the engine by hand slowly
as soon as you see the lobes move stop
check the timing marks, you should only have a few degrees of play.
