Tie rod flip?

I've got a "Big Daddy" heavy duty tie rod kit for my '86 CJ7 and I'm thinking of getting the flip kit. Anybody have any experience with this. It looks like a good idea, OR?

I have the OK4WD/Rock Equipment flip on my CJ-7. What specifically do you want to know?

Are you talking about the tapered inserts? If so I got the inserts from go-fer-it for my YJ.

Doing the flip was a bit of a pain. I learned that anytime you mess with steering you really need to know what you are doing. Moving the tie rod up changed the angle of the drag link and I ended up needing a different pitman arm. I think it handles about as well as before and it solved a clearance problem I was having with my tie rod.

All in all it worked fine and it was a lot cheaper than doing a high steer modification.

If you do it don't just flip it and assume all is well. You really need to compress your front end to make sure you do not have any rubbing or binding of the steering components. Mine did, which is what mandated the use of a different pitman arm..

I did the flip on 84 CJ 7 and thought it was relatively easy. I have a 4 inch lift, so I purchased a stock pitman arm and replaced my drop pitman arm. Not much to it really. I used to OK4WD flip kit.

I'm in the process of flipping mine right now. An alternative to inserts is to braze the taper on the botttom of the hole, then use a SnapOn #R121 reamer on the top side.

Talked to a buddy who just did this using 1 ton TREs. He just drilled out the old taper and reamed from the top for the 1 tons.. I think I'm gonna do the same..

No, I was talking to him on the phone and we got to talking about my front Waggie D44 that came out of my old CJ and is slated to go under the wife's CJ5. He told me when he swapped his Waggie D44 under his TJ he just drilled (from the top) the hole out to the smallest size of the 1 ton TRE. Then, he used a taper reamer (again from the top) until the TRE fit. If I do it I'll post pics.

I guess I'm gonna go for it too! But I'm getting the kit from "Go-Fer-It". On their kit you just drill out to 3/4" and install the new bushing (no reaming). Looks nice and easy! That Big Daddy bar is so huge, I don't need that 1 ton stuff.

You have to get the holes straight, so to do it right, you should remove the knuckles and use a drill press. Once you put the inserts in, you have to weld them. The reaming method is much quicker & easier...I did mine in a few minutes. A few buddies came by as I was finishing getting my Jeep ready after it had been down for two years for restification, started talking while I was reaming and they couldn't believe I was done already when i walked up & joined the conversation a few minutes later. By contrast, one of those buddies decided to use the Goferit setup. Had to pull his knuckles, then brought them over to my house to press out the ball joints (might as well replace them while you're in there) and use my drill press, then had to chase down someone to weld them for him.
