Ticking sound up front comes and goes...DRIVING ME CRAZY

Okay....I am getting a ticking sound that comes and goes when driving down the street....does not matter what speed...when you break it goes way..pretty sure it is the drivers side front....

So I jacked the entire jeep up and removed the front tires...with limited slip the driver side tire would not turn in 4wd....I spun the disc by hand and no ticking...I removed the break assembly and inspected and cleaned took the hub apart all good and all working fine....PLEASE HELP....If more details are needed I will try and get them to you

I couldn't geet any help on mine when it did that but I narrowed the noise down to the drivers side exhaust manifold tapping against the firewall. It think it was partially due to one motor mount being shot. I replaced both motor mounts and it helped the situation, now it only occasionally taps the firewall. Gonna replace the 30 year old body mounts next. After that I am gonna have to dimple the fire wall. Mine has a 304 so this may not be the issue with yours. Can't hurt to look though. Mine was tapping on bumps and vibrations in the roadway. Gas and brake did not affect it.

It could also just be a leak out of your exhaust manifold. Mine goes away while not on the gas and you cant really hear it unless the motor is under load.

I have the same noise. It's your brake pads. I've cut an aluminum can to match the back of the pad (as a spacer - for the caliper side) and the ticking went away......temporarily. It was gone for a while, and has come back. Have fun.
Later, T.J.

You hear it all the time when you're on the gas? My 80 did that cause my kid didn't turn the hub all the way back to 4x2. it was about a mm or 2 away. Worth a look.

Speedometer cable? Mine used to chirp and click up a storm. Try disconnecting it and see if it goes away.

Bump...

I have the EXACT same issue. Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

I'm thinking breaks too... A touch of the break and it goes away. I've got brand new breaks!

At that, my friends, is your Easter Sunday lesson in 'paying attention'!

I now return you to your regularly scheduled Jeep Forum already in progress (while I go check for a spring clip)
