TFI Wiring Help

Hello All,

Capdaddy writing on Jtepper's account.

Started working on the "Team Rush" upgrade today. Gathered parts and since the PO was not exactly neat with the wiring of the engine bay I decided to "temporarily" install the new ignition coil to determine if the upgrade would work for me.

At this point all the distributor parts are installed and the coil is temporarily mounted. I wired the new coil exactly as the old was installed and I cannot get any spark. (verified no spark with timing light and also pulled plug).

I have 2 wires to the positive on the coil. The PO had one to ground and one to a red wire so that is what i did. I also have one wire on negative.

From previous posts I gather that I may have the wiring incorrect. It is late and I have lost patience. Is there anyone that can look that the pics of my engine bay and tell me exactly what to plug where?

I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

capdaddy

Thanks GPER,

The biggest problem im having is that the wiring from the original coil is not consistent with the instructions from every writup that Ive seen. Basicly i cannot find the green wire that Im supposed to connect to the coil.

Maybe after a good nights sleep I will be able to see things more clearly.

I dont know about the fuel pump. It came with the jeep and as long as its working its good enough for me.

Lower right hand corner of the picture, your power wire to the coil isn't hooked to anything, it's laying on a plug wire.

Ohhh

Thanks JeepHammer!

So that wire to the positive. Then I need to trace the green wire from the duraspark module and connect it to the negative (along with tach)?

I really hope I can work this out.

Great Sucess!

This is capdaddy again posting on jteppers account.

THanks to all who posted replies. jtepper and I were tracing wires and after seeing some sketchy connections at the ignition module and further up stream on the wiring harness I decided to start breaking away the heat shroud.

Wow! I didnt know duct tape was suitable for making sound wiring connections! Oh out of duct tape? dont worry just twist the wires and it will hold. TRUST ME.

So it turns out the PO's wiring must have come loose while i was working on the coil yesterday. I hooked the wires up the EXACT same way as yesterday and it fired right up.

So today is going to be dedicated to fixing bad wiring. Anyone have a painless harness they are dying to get rid of?

Ford E Coil Mount in stock location for 258/232

Hi,

Here is a link on a nice easy way to hook up the Ford E Coil in the stock location.
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/tfi-ford-e-coil-installation-location-bracket-513978/

I would also try and add ground to the Head and the Ground INput to the Ford DuraSpark Ignition. The Black wire is ground and can splice into that wire on the harness side so stays with jeep wireing and change out the DuraSpark if needed with just an "unplug". This helps performance and saves the DuraSpark Ignition Modual from two common failures. These are JeepHammer's from other posts.

Let us know how you like this set up. The TeamRush Upgrade, The extra gound wires, the used Ford E Coil gave me 15% more performance, 1000 more rpm's and 2.5mpg better mileage on the HWY. Very Noticable difference and my cap, wires were new with the stock coil that ohmed out fine.

ON the coil you have faston and splice. If you have room and wire, cut the splice out and just end the wire with faston. Just an idea.

Good catch JeepHammer on wire, still hard for me to see

Regards,
Fred

I see your spark plug wires are a bit long and new. If you ask for a 1994 Jeep 4.0 plug wire set should fit better. Since they look new might be able to return them and get something that fits better. Best to not let plug wires touch each other and the engine or metal of CJ, that is ground that it is trying to find with its spark energy. Just an idea.
