hi, i am doing the tfi upgrade on a 80 cj7 with ford 302. just a couple of questions for a dummy like me, no concept of electrical connections. i have read all the internet info and still dont understand. i have the msd cap rotor set 8414 and wires 700313. on my current coil set up i have 1 white wire going to positve side of round coil, and 1 white wire and 1 green wire going to negative side of coil, i also have tach. on the connector i got from pepboys for the tfi ecoil, it has 2 green and white wires and 1 red wire how do i connect these to my current wires. i know this issue has been beat to death thanks for the help
MSD p/n 8414 is the cap adapter, cap and rotor for a Ford V-8 engine from about '58 to '85 and will work on most current Motorcraft distributors.
As for your plug wires, I can't find reference to a '700313' set of plug wires.
on my current coil set up i have 1 white wire going to positve side of round coil, and 1 white wire and 1 green wire going to negative side of coil, i also have tach.
OK, The Positive (Red) side of the new coil connector will connect to the 'White Wire' that is now connected to the positive side of your coil.
The Negative (Green) side of the new coil connector will connect to the 'White Wire' & 'Green Wire' on the Negative side of the current coil.
If your Tach is currently working, it will work with the new coil and connector.

And yes, this has been beat to death, but not by someone that has all 'White' wire color coding...
BTW, that's pretty odd...
I'm sure if you strip the harness back a ways, you will find some color in the wire insulation that will more or less match your new connector.
ok i think i got it. but what do i do with the 2nd green wire on the new connector, do i need a resistor or capacitor. also should i mount the new ecoil next to the module on the fenderwell, that would requie a rather loon spark plug wire. thanks again for all your help.
It's traditional to mount the coil next to the distributor.
On the 302 Ford you will find coil mounting bracket bosses cast/machined/threaded in the intake for the ignition coil/bracket.
Use those.
Remember, an E-core coil can be mounted in any direction,
While a Canister coil is oil filled and MUST be mounted right side up to work correctly.
Actually, that would require a rather long COIL WIRE...
And it's not that long if you mount it on the drivers side inner fender...
That's where I mounted my coils.
Please stop.. I start my days at 5am.. it's now 10:49pm and I'm trying to run thru the CJ and Fabrication Forums to see if I need to fix anything.. this kind of posting hurts. I've already deleted 3-4 threads like this..
