tfi ignition

i found this to be more common on the 258 in cjs rather then yjs so i am here to ask a question. i would like to do this upgrade to my 89 258 and am concerned about the wiring, i read this somewhere Take the existing Red wire from your stock coil and place it on the "+" of the new coil. The green wire goes to the other post."i am wondering is that all you need to do as far as wiring on my yj because i keep on seeing sights that say you need to splice and change coil connectors and so on.

how detailed is the wiring on an 89 258 because i am not really experienced this is my first car and i am really learning as everything on my yj breaks.

Geer_hed has some great write-ups on his site.

Go to locally stored resources and tech and then the TFI page.

I'm not sure about what color wires go where, my jeep has all red wires (thanks PO) but Geer_hed has some great links.

I'll second on geer hed site, very useful.

This is all the wiring needed for max performance, it is called TFI/HEI hybrid:

this is the wiring harness before installing it:

I know you mentioned that you're not experienced and the above could look a bit intimidating, it's shouldn't. do the wiring first, and just than move to the Jeep itself.

Use the best quality parts you can get, Blue streak, Standard etc, with brass terminals.

i dont know what its like on an 89 yj but the wiring for tfi in my 85 CJ was easy as hell, it had a green and red wire that just popped out of the old cannister type coil and then you connected it to the new coil, i dont know about later year models tho

I did the tfi on my 79 258 years ago and I used everything but the coil. The Accel Supper Stock coil put out a little more umph so I went with it. The Accel coil wired up just like the old can coil so it was a snap.

It should be just as easy. If the terminals don't "pop" out you may have to use a snall thin screwdriver to release the tabs that hold the terminal in place.
