Temp Sensor Location 258

I have been looking thru some older posts regarding the location of the temp sensor. Almost all note the location to the back of the head near the fire wall. Can you help me identify why mine is located at the front? The PO had the engine rebuilt and the numbers on the block and intake match a 1980. Is there numbering on the head that will tell me what what year/type it is? Thanks.

Yours is the older version of the 258 with the metal valve cover. The temp sensor is in the correct location for that engine. I belive the last year for your engine was 78 or 79. After that the sensor was towards the firewall, and the engine had a plastic valvecover.

Thanks Bill, when the PO rebuilt he must have used an older head. I haven't seen it up front on any other 1980 models before.

I have a 232 engine were the sensor is up front.

But my 76 engine has it in the back with the rest of the 258's and a metal valve cover so I would not go by the valve cover or year as identification.

I think the engine may be out of another AMC vehicle myself.
