Temp and Fuel Guage don't work

On my instrument display both the temp and fuel gauge don't work. It came that way when I bought it. The jeep is an '83 CJ7, 258 I6. Any starting points or help would be great.

sooo many places to start. Monsterslayer is, of course, the best around. I've got basic schematics and the best jeep gauge sites linked here. It's really best to look some of them over, do some tests, and then ask more narrow questions. Don't worry, ppl have gone over every inch of these POS gauge setups...

Just get used to the gas guage not working...you can fix it and fix it all it will do is just break again. The thermostat on the other hand can be fixed. start with and ohm meter and check your grounds.

There's a little more to the story. When I hooked up my multimeter the conductivity would go on and off (contact was very good) and when I checked the amperage my multimeter fuse bursted. After I took apart the display, I noticed that the two guages were made of a thin piece of metal and a small wire coiled around it many times (a primitive resitor?). Is it possible the gauges themselves are bad or is it more likely that the wiring/somewhere else in the circuit has shorted.

It is most likely the guages and sending units are bad on both. Just replace them an be done with it!

What posts were you testing? The Fuel gauge chatters with the sending unit in "pulses" so it would not have been unusual to see "on/off" circuit activity, again depending on what you were testing. Yes it is possible (read: likely) that your gauges are bad, but then, your sending unit(s) and wiring are suspect as well. What posts were you testing when your multimeter fried? Fuel gauge posts:

if you took your I feed wire straight to ground reading amps on your meter, I guess you might have some problems, but I wouldn't have thought it would have killed your fuse. What thin piece of metal? the resistor wire that runs between the A terminals of the fuel gauge and the Temp Gauge respectively? Yes that is a resistor, b/c the temp guage can't handle 12v, it has to be regulated and suppressed to 5-7v.

Thanks to all of you, for you input. The info about the chirping was a big help. The guages are probably fine. I will check out my sending units.

Happy holidays to y'all
