Tell me about Dana 44's with 10 Spline axles

I have a Dana 44 with the 10 spline axles in it. Is there anything I can do with this rearend other than sale it for scrap? Is it any worse off than a regular D44? It would be a direct bolt in into my 77 CJ5.

I might be ahead of myself. the front end I have which is a Dana 27? has 10 spline axles, dunno about the Dana 44. Got in a hurry perhaps.

those are axle off an early jeep like 65 and earlier. postal jeeps had 10- spline 44

Don't see why they would be, but you never know what people are looking for.

Heck, look at how much old Chrysler junk is going for at auctions now....more than any GM or Ford stuff, and Chrysler stuff was always a distant 3rd back in the day. (just like now)

I can't believe how much Hemi Cudas and all go for.....these were cool cars, but never were thought of the way they are now until really, this decade.

sell it on craigslist if you dont want it, people around here still buy'em for willys projects ect. atleast its not a timken two half rear end

What's this axle out of? the only 10 spline 44's I know of are from early cj's which won't fit yours (offset vs center diff.)

Maybe really old ones did, but the DJ received 30 spline Dana 44s about the same time that CJ's did.

The only '77 CJ that the subject axle would bolt into would be a CJ7 with Quadratrac. No CJ5's came with Qtrac, so it isn't a bolt in for a 77 CJ5.

Got to looking more closely at the rearend last night. It has one piece axles, and a centered differential. So maybe its out of a 72' and later CJ. It appears to be 30 spline, but the front end that came along with this rear end when I received it was a Dana 27 with 10 splines. O'well, I think I am going to build this Dana 44 and hopefully I wont run into any problems.

It has 3.73 gears, narrow track

Put some wheel spacers on it to equal the a widetrack axle, because I am going to have to perchase some 3.73 gears for a Dana 30 front end, and I might as well put the Widetrack I have sitting in my shop in it, and build it. I am a firm believer in widetrack axles.

If it's centered with flanged axleshafts, it's a 72-75 and 30 spline.

Just pull a shaft out and count the splines, but it does sound like a 72-75 30 spline

Flanged axle shafts will be 30 spline. You can pull the cover and look at the differentail side gears. It would also give you a chance to assess the condition of the internals at the same time. A 72-75 CJ-5 or Commando 44 will have 50.5" WMS dimension, same as NT AMC 20.

This is the closest thread I could find to ask this question. I have a 79 cj5. The PO burned up rear drivers side wheel bearing so bad that it welded the bearing to the axel shaft & chewed the crap out of the axel housing, where the bearing cup sits. We replaced axel shaft & bearing, tried industrial lock tight, hoping it would hold the bearing where it is. Nope, it let go. We also have a 85? Cj7 frame. They both look to be AMC 20s. What do I have to do, except measure to see if this will fit my cj5? I have 35" tires, 3" lift on the 5.

check the gearing to see if it matches your cj5, the 85 axles will be wide track. If you have both axles I would swap them both into your cj5. they will bolt right in and be 3 or so inches wider. but if the gearing is not desirable you may want to get your gears swapped over to the 85 housings.
