here is the only thread I found and participated in regarding the AMC V8 upgrade using a CDI and a Motorcraft style distributor with big wires and the huge cap, it even list parts numbers and we discussed cost. I have yet to do it myself, but probably will next tune up.

I'll be watching this thread, as I am also thinking of doing "Team Rush". I have a mostly stock 1979 - 304 motor with the exception of Edelbrock intake and 4 barrel carb. I would like to do the first stage soon and would appreciate any part numbers needed and associated with the v-8. I don't know but if Jeephammer has ever thought of putting together some kits for the upgrades I would certainlly like to purchase one, also with installation details.

Thank you

I'm in the process of doing the "Team Rush" upgrade on my 304 right now. I purchased the MSD "Cap-Adapt" (part # 8414) from O'Reilly Auto Parts. It included the cap, adaptor and rotor. They had to order it but it was in the next day. I paid $56 for that including shipping. I also purchased new AC Delco plugs. The only issue I'm running into right now is finding plug wires that are the right length. The stock distributor cap has female fittings for the plug wires and the MSD has male fittings, so I'm having to find wires for another vehicle that uses a male distributor cap and close to equal length wires. I have a buddy at a Ford dealership working finding me some wires and the E-coil.

You will have to cut your own wires to get them to fit right. I used these wires by MSD and they are great wires. A little spency but worth it in my book. They work perfect with the MSD Cap-Adapt.

phishmaster the distributor you have will not work with the upgrade parts. You have a Prestolite distributor and you need the Motorcraft/Duraspark distributor found on any AMC V8 from '78-91.

I find it hard to believe that you can't find any info though. I've seen JeepHammer, aka TeamRush, aka Junkyard Genius posting the same info ad nauseum for the V8 and I6 for a good ten years now on several forums. Many other people have also documented their upgrades and distributor swaps on webpages.

Have you googled it (Team Rush upgrade)?

Where have you looked?

Honestly, the V8 info has been posted countless times.

I just told you what you have and that it won't work without changing the distributor.

This is as much spoon feeding as I'm willing to provide.

There is not that much difference between the I6 and V8 for this upgrade except for 2 extra cylinders on the V8. Replacing the dizzy uses the same TDC method for both. After your diizzy is in place, the rest is just plug and play for the most part. No rocket science involved.

Here's a nice pic from JeepHammer showing the V8 hookup.

Do I have to replace the ignition box to get the full effect or can I continue to run the stock Duraspark module?

You can run the stock module and still see a noticable difference. Another option is the GM HEI ignition module, which JeepHammer has also covered.

The use of the E-core coil is where you see the most bang for your buck.
