Black is the ground, should slide on small thread stud. The white are the tails. Large red battery feed. Sounds like fuse, or the light switch in your hand. Should have power to white wire when switch is pulled. Do the dash light work? Should come on with tail lights. The grounding on Jeeps is not the best. There's a good post in the forum on grounding. Easy to do and solves alot of problems. Good Luck!

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

If you have the wiring schematic from www.offroaders.com you can find it marked on the light switch at terminal 16.

It is a ground for the courtesy lights, which are fed from the same switch via an orange wire at 51. I do not see an orange wire so I presume you do not have courtesy lights fitted.

You really do need to look up that scheamtic and print it out and keep it to hand to understand where all those wires are going and what they are for, as well as a few bits of basic test equipment.

Are you getting a feed from the white wire on the switch at terminal 19? That feeds the parking lamps.
