Tailgate Pictures?

Well we put CJ grills, fenders, and hoods on our YJ's to get more of a classic look so why not the tailgate of a CJ? If anyone has any pictures of how their tailgates secure to the body and the top latches and the body lines of how they match up with the tub, could they post them? A few people have done this conversion but not in a way that pleases me, its always done sloppy and looks bad up close or underneath. I'm going to try making it look cleaner and function better. Thanks in advance.

July issue of JP magazine has an article about this. Shows how to do hinges, latches, etc. when converting a Wrangler to a CJ tailgate. (I think they're doing it to a TJ, but should be similar for a YJ). Unfortunately it does not cover any issues the CJ tailgate would create with a YJ hardtop.

Very simple to do. 2 holes to fill for the YJ brackets, and about 6 to drill. That is if
you want to use the tire holder. There are several write ups on the forum about this topic.

Here are some pictures, it wasn't too bad to do.
I filled the YJ holes and just put the tailgate in place, had the other latches and welded them on.

A lot of people cut the bottom of the tub to get the 4 bolts in for the hinges and put a backing plate in there.

You can do this or just attach nuts through the holes. It all depends on if you plan on "using" the tailgate or not. If you use nuts, i wouldn't put a ton of weight on it, if you want it for show, it will work for you. If you want it to be really sturdy and supported, put a backing plate on it to help distribute the load.

I will be doing this in about 2 weeks. Looks pretty easy from the forum write-ups. Looks like it fits pretty well too.

Side question, I just put my soft top on my CJ and the Bestop requires you to put the tailgate down to remove to bar/seal so you can roll up your back window. This requires you to unzip both sides of the rear window so you can reach around and flip the latches up on the tail gate inside the jeep to open it. Kind of a PITA. Especially since i have a Tuffy Strong box back there that i keep my tools and stuff in.
Much like everyone is talking about i would love to keep the authentic tailgate on there but it would be really nice to have an external control (like the YJ) to be able to open and close the tailgate without having to go through the motions of contorting around to get the latches open.

I saw the article in JP but I didn't like how they hacked up the sheet metal where they cut the holes and installed the plates. If I do this conversion I'll more than likely use the tailgate to sit on and stand on, and as a work bench on the trail. I just need a few pictures of how CJ tailgates are mounted. Wasn't there a few CJ's with external tailgate latches too?

If you saw the article and have looked at the various online write-ups (I personally did this mod and wrote it up 10 years ago), then what else is there to see? Drill four holes for the hinges, decide how you want to secure the bolts, get the interior brackets from a CJ tub or fab something similar and weld them in.

Yes, but they're older & dimensionally different. You might also want to search the Non-Hardcore Jeep section at pirate4x4.com...there was a thread a couple of weeks ago and there's a guy who grafted the YJ latch onto the CJ tailgate and hooked up an electric release for it instead of cutting for the handle...pretty slick.

Would be really easy to do with a '75 or older tailgate:

Alright what I'm getting at is, are there places in the CJ body that are cut away like they did in the article to the YJ body? Do you guys have clear access to your tailgate hinges on the back side? Thats all I want a picture of.

No, no clear access...you have to cut or pry your way into the body channel. This is how I did mine:

I didn't even have do any cutting. The plates just fit through the holes on the bottom and I was able to get them lined up with the holes without much trouble.

I left the 'cages' around my plates so that they'd sit on the bottom of the channel for support.
