Will the sifter move through the gears but the jeep does not move? Have you tried moving the transfer case shifter to make sure it is in 2H it is try 4H or 4L. Also check to make sure your drive shaft is still intact.

Are you trying this with the engine running and clutch in or shut off? Did the jeep come that way or did it just happen?

Have you tried taking the shifter off of the transmission? 5 bolts, I believe, the hardest one to get to is the back one. Take it off and see what it looks like inside, you may have a busted pivot or something...

Yeah, that part is simple. Putting it back together just involves some black RTV and a little patience letting it set before tightening the bolts up.

I had never done any transmission work prior to this fall, either. Just got done replacing my T4 for a T5 and putting in a brand new clutch. If it's nothing obvious, you may be looking at a new transmission, and in that case you'd be pulling the shifter to get it out anyhow. My real guess is that something is locked up inside and it's gonna have to come out.

Ok I took the shift out and it looked pretty good. The teflon pivot looked pretty good to. I tried to move shifter shaft with a screw drive it still wouldnt go in to gear. Im thinking that the tranny mite be shot. yeah I was thinking about putting a t5 in it anyways. Id much rather have a 5 speed. but thanx for your help.

Just a heads up - I was all excited about putting in a 5sp as well, waited for a T5 to show up on Craigslist and bought one...

I never use 5th gear. It's a dog at 55-60mph. May be different at highway speeds, but that 5th gear is just added weight as far as I can tell now

I have the T5 in my rig and love it. I scoot around town and sometimes on the highway. My rig bogs down around 60 MPH and that might be a gearing thing. Going to check the gearing in the spring when I take my rig out of storage.

I have the T5 with a 3.54 rear end and 31 tires. Its a little stiff on take off but runs nicely. I can easily hit 60, have done 70 in it no problem, but on hills I need to downshift. In town I get 15 mpg, highway 16-17. I would like to put 3.73 gears in it though to make it pull 1st gear easier, run easier.

Ive had a few people tell me that having a 5th gear isnt what youd expect. that id never use it i dont drive the on the highway much and if i do its not for long. I have a bagged toyota to and i never use 5th not even on the highway. Might just stick with the t4. It just depends how reasonable i can find one for. Everyone around here wants 1000 up for them. I appreciate the info.

I have a T5 and never really use 5th gear. Its a dog I have 2.73 rear with 235/75/15 tires. So I just drive it as 4 speed. You can get either a T4 ot T5 and it will be a direct swap nothing to change. If you get the T5 and its a dog drive as a 4 speed.
