T-18 Transmission

Just wondering how many of you have the 4 speed T-18 transmission in your rig?

Installed a 6.32:1 T-18 in my '71 CJ5 back in 1995. The improvement in control offroad is phenomenal.

It has been well worth the cost. I have done a total of six 3-speed to T18 swaps. Most were replacing a T150 and a couple were T14 replacements.

Were any of those with a 304 in front of the T150? How easy is the swap? Can the T18 use the Dana 20 transfercase?

All but one was behind an AMC V8. Three 304's, two 360's and one 258 if anyone is counting. The T150 to T18 swap isn't all that difficult. I have used an AMC T18 in all the swaps that I have done. If you can find (afford) a CJ T18, the swap is very easy. Four times I have used a long input shaft T18 from a fullsize J Truck or Waggy. You have to use a short shaft kit, which you can get from PartsMike.com.

Also, I have used the D20 transfer case in all the swaps. There is a factory adapter plate between the tranny and t-case. As long as you have that, bolting the D20 is easy. This adapter plate is also where the trans mount bolts.

You have to move the skid plate back on the frame. There is already holes for this in the frame. The front driveshaft will have to be lengthened and the rear has to be shortened. The T18 / D20 will be about 3 inches longer than the T150 / D20.

Quick dumb question... I recently picked up a 78 with a T18, should I assume it's the good 6.32 low range, or could it possibly be the crappy 4.xx one? It's factory original. Most of the sources say it should be the 6, but not all...
Anybody know?

I have two. Both sitting on a pallet next to the Jeep.

I gotta get my act together and sell some junk.

4:1 will be syncronized. The 6.32:1 will be straight geared. The 4:1 isn't bad. Nice to have more than three road gears. Just go lower in the t'case.

BTW...I like my T18

I don't know why anyone would say "no" on this poll.

I picked mine up for around $450 with a Dana 20 and adapter plate. The tranny is much bigger than the smaller 3 speeds but it's short enough that I am going to swap it into my CJ-5 and the angles aren't too bad.

I am not yet done with my buildup but I can't wait to have the strength and the added control of the 6.32 first gear.

Maybe because the poll asks if you RUN at t18 in your jeep. I do not. (But I'd like to)

Gotta convert the back end and use an adaptor to bolt up a tcase. Don't know about the front, I'm still getting my pieces together myself.

I think even the clutch parts is interchangeable to a point. I think for the Ford Tranny you need a special bushing/bearing for the input shaft.

All can come from Novak or Advance adaptors.

And this I all learned from here, there is someone who probably is better versed in this.
