T-18 = dana 300?

i have a T-18 out of a j20 truck. would that have had a dana 300 attached? some one told me if i want to use my dana 20 than i will have to buy an adapter ($500ish) and it would be cheaper to get a dana 300 and put it on there. is that true? my dana 20 is shot any ways.

Not true. If the J-truck is '79 and older it will have a Dana 20 behind it. If it is '80 or newer it will have a NP208 behind it. Jeep never offered the Dana 300 behind a T18 in any model.

ok its an 82 so it has the NP208. what do you recomend that i do and what are my options?

That transfer case will have the front output going to a driver's side differential. Won't work on a CJ without a front axle swap. It also has a very long input shaft and a long (8") adapter from the tranny to the transfer case. Not exactly what you want with a CJ if you want a rear driveshaft in it. And no, no other transfer case you would want will bolt up to the spot where the 208 lives. Lots of people think that a Dana 300 will work there because the bolt pattern is the same. The problem is the NP208 uses a 31 spline input shaft and the 300 uses a 23 spline input. Go find another tranny.

I am planning to swap a t-18 from a ford 4x4 into my cj7 with a 304 and dana 300. the kit cost $470. and includes everything but the rubber/poly mount which is $16 more.

I've done both T18 and SM465 swaps and think the sm465 is the better choice using novaks new 1" adapter. Trans and adapter length is 13". The sm465's are easier to find and any of them will work (2wd or 4wd) since the novak kit comes with a new output shaft. Novak kit is $490
