Switch from T176 and Dana 300 to T150 and Dana 20?? Need Advice

So I have a T176 in my CJ now and the reverse gear is whipped along with its syncro and the top is all busted from previous owner. So heres the options spend about 275 for parts, buy another 176 for anywheres 200-300. Or get a T150 and a Dana 20 From a friend that has alot of jeep parts for about 100. Will the T150 and Dana 20 use the same mounting in the cross member? or will I have to do alittle fab work? Im assuming im also gonna need differant front and rear shaft. I need the expert advice from you veteran jeepers. Thanks Alot

Ok - I'm not the expert but I believe you will need a new skid plate as the mounting holes are in a different location and if that is the case I think you will also need to get new drive shafts. Can anyone out there speak with more certainty than I??

I would fix the T-176 or get a replacement. The cost of the mods to install the T-150/D20 would make up the cost of fixing or replacing your existing T-176. Besides, the T-176 is a much more desireable tranny. In fact, I have a rebuilt T-176 and rebuilt D300 sitting in my basement waiting for my swap. Just don't have the time right now.

What's a rebuild kit for a T176 cost?... $300?

The T176/D300 combo is a lot better than the T150/D20 setup.

You'd need the D20 crossmember or you'll have to modify the D300 crossmember. New Driveshafts. Probably a new or modified tranny tunnel cover and shifter boot.

Revese gear syncro? That's going to be impossible to fix. They didnt have one.

I swapped my T-150/D20 for a T-177/D300 and I had to swap skid plates, driveshafts, tranny cover, Clutch plate. It can add up fast.

Master kits run 69.00 to 149.00 depending on the vendor.

My bad its fourth gear I was alittle distracted and hurried while typing this and meant to say the reverse was whipped along with a syncro. I dont care about the rebuilding factor those parts are fairly cheap. The cover is missing a chunk from the previous owner also, and those covers are exactly cheap either. It reeally doesnt matter to me whats the gold standard of parts, im just happy to finally have a CJ5 and that the 4X4 works. Im not gonna be scaling the Mojave with it just playing in the local resevoirs and enjoying some hill climbs. The body is a 75 so the tunnel business is already taken care of and its actually hacked up from the reject installing the T176. I knew the parts I was gonna need and just wanted some pointers on what you guys thought I should do.

If the body is a '75, is the frame as well? If it is then the T-176 wouldn't be original, a T-90/D20 I believe is the original trans/T-case. You would be able to find all the pieces you need as stock items. Don't forget the pilot bushing in the crank, they are different as well.

Having said that, the T-176/D300 combo is more desirable due to gearing, strength, driveability.

Total agreement with everyone: Swapping in a T15/D20 for a T176/D300 is a huge step backward. Get the parts and repair the T176.

Alright, Thanks alot guys. Gonna get the rear gear cluster and not worry bout the cover because its not really affecting anything and get a rebuild kit and have a nice winter project while im working on swapping the fiber body on. Thanks
