Switch on the dash just to the left of the steering wheel?

This is probably a really stupid question, but I can't figure it out.

I just bought a 1976 CJ7 (304 V8) and there is a switch just to the left of the steering wheel (actually I think it is to the left of the clock). It is a little metal switch that can be set up or down. This is the only CJ I have seen with the switch. Anyone have any ideas what it is? I can't tell that it is doing anything when I switch it. Until I know better, I am going to tell everyone it is my custom turbo switch and just push down on the gas when I switch it.

Thanks in advance for this and the 10,000 questions I am about to have with my new toy.

Can you post a pic.? But I would gues that the previous owner had fog lights, rear lights, security, or some non-factory accessory hooked to that toggle switch. But a pic. might clear some things up.,,,,maybe.

Thought it may be custom, but don't really see anything after market on the Jeep that it would turn on or off.. I also haven't taken time to follow it behind the dash to figure it out. I figured I would get a quick answer if it was stock.. BTW, I am trying to figure out how to post a pic, but I am thinking I need to upgrade before I have the capabilities.. Is that correct?

Could be for the dome light - that's where my switch is. Maybe your Jeep used to have a hard top.

Deff from the P.O. - Since it's next to the normal light switch, I'm guessing it was for some fog lights he had on there, but didn't give to you. Where do the wires go?

Nope... My switch isn't the same thing as the picture above.. My 76 CJ doesn't have the left speaker (just solid dash) and it is located right where the speaker is in the picture above.

Is there an easy way to post pics, or do you have to have an upgraded account?

By Jove I think he's got it!

When I went to swap out a new foot dimmer, it fell apart from all the rust. everyone told me to put in a toggle for the hi/lo beams.

Does your foot dimmer work? Do you have a foot dimmer switch in the floor? Have you flipped the switch off and on at night? That's my guess!

I bet we are spending more time guessing what it is than the time it would take you to find out by looking. Absolutely it is a custom switch. Get under the dash and follow the wires... I had a switch mounted on mine also. It went to a set of custom fog lights.

Also keep in mind that when people sell jeeps they yank a lot of aftermarket stuff (Lights, winches, etc) and it may not go to anything at all any more. Chase the wires down and check the switch at night as already mentioned.

I am guessing the same as the other post, aftermarket and follow the wires.
As for pics, you need to be a member for 30 days and have 50 threads I think, just become a Jeep supporter. You can use photobucket to post your links to the pics and someone will post them here for you.

That picture is of mine. My dimmer is on the floor, that switch toggles the dome light on the hard top on and off.
