swing out tire carrier

I have looked for the answer to my question but cant find it on here, I want to duplicate or come close to the original spare tire carrier but I cant find out what size of square tubing I should use, would it need to be 2" square or could 1 1/4" square work? I know it depends on the weight on the tire Im just trying to get a rough idea to see what I can get from my friend that has some spare square tubing.

Definitely smaller than 1". Going strictly off of memory I'm thinking 1" is more like it.

2" is too wide. Without measuring it, I would guess the square tubing is about 1-1/4" or 1-1/2"wide.

yep! That's right. Here's a photo of my 1985 carrier showing 1.26". Keep in mind it has 2 layers of paint. The photo was taken sideways and then rotated so you can more easily see the numbers on the caliper display.

There are differences in top and bottom square tube dimensions on oem carrier. Also if you buy an OEM make sure it comes with ALL the mounting pieces. Look at diagram in FSM to see all pieces. All are needed to support tire weight.

Fairly thin: .084 inches measured at the end where latch handle is located.
