Strange (well, for me!) sounds from the drivetrain

for a couple of days i hear strange sounds from somewhere under my car.

it is loudest in 5th gear (258 cui, T5) and occurs if i roll and then touch the gas slightly and if i drive slow and release the gas quickly. It might also occur while going faster but i think the engine is too loud to hear it through.

it sound like a metallic "klack" somewhere in the middle of the car(?).

where should i begin the search?

maybe the u-joints of the drive-shaft? could they be worn out and rock under load changes?

i hope i chose the right terms (with the help of leo.org).

gtx from germany

maybe i keep it like this and wait until it gets worse.

Hi gtx,

Strange noises or vibrations in the driveline, under load only, are usually caused by bad u-joints.

X2 on what Matt sez, and broken eng/tranny mounts will do it too.
When was the last time you lubed your U-joints and the DS slip spline?
