Is it still a scrambler if...

Hey everyone,

Silly question but it's bugging me and wondering what everyone thinks.

If a CJ8 has been shortened, is it still a CJ8/scrambler?

Only the body has been cut down.

LOL, but yes.

Just like if you stretch a CJ5, it isn't then a CJ6 or 7!

Show pics or it didn't happen!

This is from the ad the PO had posted online. Since then, AUX lights have been removed as well as the cables over the hood. The mirrors are back to stock and replaced the front fender flares. image-647266696.jpg

It's usually referred to as "bobbed". Yes, it's still a Scrambler

Yeah I know.

The only plus side is, is that I live in a very crowed city and parking is a huge issue. Makes it a bit easier to find parking. But when the time comes for a full paint job I plan on bringing it back to stock length

To the first quote above, technically yes it is an 8. Agree with the second quote.

I think it was more acceptable "back in the day" to "bob" the rear end of a CJ-8. Mainly for rock crawlers, where the longer wheelbase and the "bobbed" tail helped with obstacles and "departure" angles (rear end clearance).

As the 8's numbers dwindle, a bobbed 8 is not such a good idea and most likely devalues the vehicle.

It's doubtful that only the body has been cut down. The rear end of the frame would need to be cut back and spliced to support the new "bobbed" rear body mount locations. An "un-bobbed" CJ8 frame will measure 18" from the center line of the shackle bolt, rearward to the rear cross member. From your picture - it looks like the frame has been modified also. Just eye-balling it, you will need to re-add about 12 inches onto the frame rails aft of the shackle bolt.

Good Luck

It's as much still a CJ8 as a CJ7 that has been stretched 10 feet is still a CJ7. Technically, yes. Literally, no.

Looks more like a CJ 7.5
I kinda like it. Guessing that is a TJU top. Looks good, congrats.
No disrespect intended, but every Scram that gets cut up makes the original ones worth more.
I still like yours, more pics are required.

Too vertical and square at the back. I'm guessing the top is modified/custom as well.
