First.... you put the washers where??? between the nut and arm would be ok.. but not between the tre and the arm!!!! that could be dangerous....
the spindle stops are the only limmit. there is no limmit for the column. Sounds like the gearbox is loose, or the frame around the gearbox is not in good condition..

The washers were placed between the nut and the arm . As far as the gear box play all mounting nuts are torqed and tight, and the brackets are secure, but it looks as if the main vehicle frame on the front end flexes, one side goes down while the other up. Weird

does this only happen in one direction?? could the gearbox be out of center?? maybe this would allow it to overtravel one way?!?!?

Look at the last picture. It appears that he needs a drop pitman arm. Did you put a lift on your rig? The two tie rod arms should be parallel. Your drag link (the tie rod that goes from the passenger side to the steering box) is angled. This will cause bump steer when you hit a decent bump. Do a quick search on bump steer and drop pitman... Good luck

Frame flex is a well-known and notorious problem on CJs. Both the steering box mounting bracket and the frame in that area are highly insufficient for oversized tires, and can become weakened over time even from normal use on older rigs. Take a look at this thread: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f8/wag-steering-box-more-steering-box-mount-brace-installed-364787/ for some pics of a steering box brace and an actual heavy duty replacement for the weak "sheetmetal" steering box mount. If your entire box is moving and you are sure all bolts are tight, then you need to do one or both of these modifications.

I did find some play in my steering box before, I also found a missing bolt and a broken bolt hole on the mounting bracket ,I ended up taking the bracket off and welding it up, I then put everything back and torqued the bolts and it was 100% better ,but I still have the frame flex thing. I have a 3 1/2" lift with stock pitman, the shackles are 1". I seem to find out things wrong on this project every day lol. I found my columb bearing blown out, it mounts about 4 to 5" out from the firewall. I can grab the steering columb by hand and bang it around side to side. Maybe this columb flexes upward after the wheel stops bottom out and maybe this is contributing to the problem.. Gotta check it out tomorrow.. Also I notice when turning the steering wheel after the wheel stops bottom out, part of the frame flex is my shackles moving to one side as well as my springs a little..not good...
