Steering box specs or stamping numbers?

Hey everyone, I've looked on several sites and google also and I just can't seem to find any information on steering boxes. I know they have a stamped number on them, but is that like more of a serial number, or is it directly related to the gearing of it and it's intended vehicle?

Reason I ask is because a couple people seem to think my steering box is no good.. (I'm still currently ruling the easier stuff out), but for worst case scenario I'd like to know how to find a new box if it turns out it is. A guy has a new/old stock one for sale, but I don't know how to tell if it's the right one for my jeep.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I don't know what the POs did to mine, so I don't know if the numbers on mine are right or not!

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. (I'm hoping it's not the box, but it'd be good information to know anyways)

The stamped # cast in should be a 76 for all Saginaw boxes of that type. Millions of them out there, on Chevys etc. It will not tell you the turn ratio, i.e. close or wide. The # of bolt holes for mounting may be three or four depending on the year, just find the same as you have. The other differences may be the input shaft on the steering column end; might be 3/4" or may be 13/16". If it is a power steering box, it may have the O ring style hose ends or they may be the flanged style; only application difference was early or later years.
In short, most any of them with the right # of bolt holes will work; you may have a difference in the input shaft or hose ends.
If I were junk yard shopping, I would look at the full sized vehicles or trucks for the wide ratio boxes. The sporty models like Camaro and Firebird used a quicker ratio box and can get to be a handful in a short wheelbase rig.
