starter issues ? comments anyone

ok..... my current proj. is a mix of parts, & i'm having trouble with starters not lasting very long. current combination is-- 360 from 80ish wagoneer, t-18 from 70ish j-20....... are there any differences between starters during 70-83 that would cause early failure if i was'nt using the correct one. I would think it should match the year of the bell housing [right or wrong] or is there any difference in flywheels throughout the yr's.... or any thing anyone else can think of

Part #'s for the I6 and 304 are the same, I would imagine the 360 would be as well. What's going wrong with the starters?

I belive the AT and MT starter drive (bendix) gears have different tooth counts.

sorry about the lack of info they are wearing out the nose cone bushing, then of course the armature is grounding out the coil windings, the last one the flywheel ate the bendix up just behind the gear like its going in too far, second starter back it wore off about half of the gear like it wasnt going in far enough...wish i had measured the nose cones before i traded them in for cores, thats why i was wondering if there was a length difference, or if there is a tooth count difference between some yrs. i have rotated the fly wheel around ,nothing major wrong other than a few burrs that i filed off prior to putting the last one on. its not costing me any thing w/ the autozone [lifetine warrenty] but its still a pain to change it every 2-4 months.or do you guys think that autozone is the prob??

I got a "Mean Green" starter, haven't had a problem since!
