sr4 tranny in 80 CJ

I have an 80 cj5 with a great combo, an old chevy 235 straight 6 and from what i can figure out an sr-4 transmission, ive been giving thought to putting in a 350 chev but am wondering if any of the better trannys will bolt into my jeep or if i will have to modify things to make another one work, any info would be great! By the way, the sr-4 has done just fine so far, but have been told by many sources that it just wont want to hold up to the v-8

It definitely won't hold up to an 8. You're even lucky it has lasted this long on a 6, as it was really meant for the GM 151ci 4-banger they started using that year (although AMC did put some out with the 258).

If you go with an AMC V8, you'd have an easy time bolting a better tranny in. However, with some $$$$ and adapters, you'll be able to mate to a 350 no problem.
