Speedometer gear in Dana 20?
I keep reading about changing the speedometer gear in newer Jeeps like it's a simple swap. I pulled the output section of my Dana 20 off yesterday for something else and it looks like I'd be pressing bearings and seals out to change anything inside there. Am I missing something or is this much worse on a CJ?

No need to "press" anything out of the Dana 20.
It's been about 18 months since I did mine, and I can't remember what I did, as it was rather simple and to othe point (that is if you're somewhat mechanically inclined) Loosen some screws and bolts. Tap here. Tap there. And It's apart. I did need an extra set of hands for a portion or two of re-assembly.

This is straight out of the Jeep CJ Rebuilder's Manual.
At rear bearing cap, remove the clamp for the speedometer drive gear housing. Note the notches on the top of the speedometer housing. The shaft offset can be positioned to fit a variety of driven gear diameters. When adjusting speedometer ratios for oversized tires and axle gearing changes, this housing design is very useful. This was for a Dana 300, hope it helps ya out. |
