Sourcing a Warn 8274 in need of a rebuild?

For the past year+ I've been trying to acquire an 8274 in need of a rebuild. I've always wanted one (owned 2 CJs and a YJ and no winches yet ), and I've never gone through a winch rebuild and I'm thinking it would be a fun experience. Mostly craigslist and eBay searches. No luck yet. Figured I'd reach out on the CJ forum to see if anybody has any leads or tips on finding one of these? Any help is appreciated.

There are +/-3 for sale local to me, last I checked - $450-600 range. Let me know if you need any facilitation. (Fort Collins Craigslist)

And you're thinking it would be a fun experience? You must be crazy. I guess not as bad as a transmission rebuild, but still.

To me, the degree of fun would depend on the condition of the winch.

I've seen pics of 8274s, that looked like they'd been sitting in a pond, that guys played he!! getting apart, and cleaning up. Mine came apart easily, though I didn't do a complete re-furb on it.

As walker mentioned, the good ones routinely show up on CL for about $500 around here.

Good luck,

Matt

Check out estate sales and farm (or non-farm even) auctions in your area. I bought one at a farm auction a few years ago for $160 and it was in very good shape. I get my best deals on parts/tools/stuff like that at auctions.

I got to hand it you, CSP, you are one thrifty S0B!!

Let me know if you see any ARB lockers at one of those auctions, eh?

Not to hijack but I love going to farm/estate auctions- I have scored some great deals on stuff:

40" Swampers on 8 lug wheels $75- was loading them in my truck when someone offered me $150. Got him to go to $200 and he now owns them (I don't own anything that 40s would even come close to fitting!).

Set of 33" mismatched tires (two each of two different ones)- thought they were $25 each when I was bidding, turns out they were all four $25. Sold them to a buddy for $50 because he needed them more than me.

Lots of great deals on tools and such- even a 54" lawnmower for $400

I got one on a 76 Waggy for $300, then sold the Waggy for $350. Course I ended up with about $600 in the winch by the time I replaced the battery cables, steel cable, solenoid pack and cover, brake pawl, lower seals, motor, remote, and bought a mounting plate for it, but it works great.

Found two on my local craigslist for $400 (for the pair). One was missing remote, solenoid pack, and cable, but the other one works fine as is. I have both completely disassembled now for new lower seals and clean up.

Remember to search for "Warn winch", "Warren Winch", "Warren Wench", and "Warn Wench". Lots of these went to people who apparently can't read/ spell.

I've also seen them listed under "Jeep winch (wench)" ...usually by some pi$$ed off wife who is getting rid of all of her x-husband's crap.

Not to hijack the thread either, but I have one that needs to be rebuilt. Is there a service that would rebuild these things. It's not something that I have the time nor the desire to do myself.

I would pay good money to get it back to like new factory condition.

Wow, I'm finding local results after searching for "wench" and warren winch." Right on, appreciate the tip! Hopefully something will hit soon with a broader net. Going to hit up the ads in other cities to see if anybody might be travelling this way or could meet in the middle, etc. Thanks for the help on this!

i bough one about seven years ago for $500 and it had a jeep attached to it. the 8274 are very simple to rebuild, hardly anything needs to be done to the gear box. maybe a new motor but you can buy them. most time its just a clean up
