Great progress. Hard to get a really nice weld on thin sheet metal. You're doing great though, especially if you can get it put together without allot of warpage. How much more do you have left on the tub?

I'm really close, I think I'm gonna clean up the front portion to weld up while the kids are napping, then I have two little patches... I have thought that I prolly don't need to patch them because of the rest of the holes in the tub, but they are rough rust spots, and I want to cut the bad edges out... then wire wheeling and POR'ing.

Welll, my welder just died... I was hoping it was the cycle, but it's dead.......... It was cheap and old... now how do I convince the wife to let me buy a new one. Any suggestions on a new welder???

I guess this means that I need to work on the brakes.

Went and got a cheap welder... bad idea, but it worked... so I finished up the floorboard, and started to wire wheel a well.... 2 hours later...

In this shot you can see a light coat of black stuff... it is like tar and is incredibly difficult to get rid of... it just spins and sticks somewhere else!!!

Tomorrow I have the entire day dedicated to the Jeep... the plan is to POR 15 the under side by nightfall... probably won't happen!

Glad the welder worked out for you Bill. All day to work on the Jeep huh. We'll be watching for those pictures. Wonder if that black stuff is road oil? You might try cleaning it with some diesel fuel or something that cuts road oil just to see if it'll come off.

No it looks like it may have been "rust inhibitor" from like 20 years ago... it's everywhere, on the inside too!!!

Looks pretty tough whatever it is. I guess if it's stuck good you could just spray right over it.

I believe it is the original undercoating. I had to get through that too. A 45 grit flapdisc burned through it pretty well, but it can gum them up. I found that a 60 grit sanding disc worked the best, if you have something like a 6" sander/polisher. Also, it helps if you take a stiff putty knife and remove all the "big" stuff first. Definitely don't paint over it! It does not work. Been there... done that!

Thanks Skerr... I have some flap discs I will try tomorrow... this stuff looks like something that someone said, hmmm, this stuff will be next to impossible to get off, lets try it...

Jim, now that I have a better idea how to get rid of the stuff, hopefully it will be an early day... but then again, we all know how that goes... even if it works great, I'll find something else wrong!!!!

Better to find those things wrong right now than later my friend. Looking forward to seeing that tub with POR on it.

Well, today started late. The wife wasn't feeling good, so her original plans to meet her mom, who had the boys overnight, fell through, so I hung out with her. Then the day was set back more when the Giants game was pushed up to 1:00 pm. well, after the first two innings, I decided to get to work on the Jeep...

I started with the wire wheel, but then remembered what Skerr said. While looking for my flap discs I found a rapid strip pad that I bought a while back and figured i'd try it. It worked great, In the time it took me to wire wheel the one wheel well, I pretty much stripped the entire underside.

After killing the 4.5" rapid strip wheel, I went to the store to get another, they only had the 11", so I figured why not, bigger is better right???

I took a chunk out of my finger with the rapid strip thing since I didn't have the guard on... call it an object lesson, I didn't touch it again!!!
I'm not quite done stripping, but I got more dane than I expected after the late start. I tried to take tomorrow off to get some more done, but I couldn't... oh well, POR by next weekend!!!

Don't hurry yourself, but I really wanted to see that POR on there. You're doing a great job at stripping the tub!! Hope the finger heals quick!

The wheel well you see just up top, was a pain... that black stuff I was talking about was so thick in spots, that I went to scrape it off with a screw driver and it was almost an 1/8" thick in spots!!! I was so frustrated with it, I started grinding on it with a cutting wheel!!!
